Spread and slippage cost checks before market orders for traders in India

Guides · 2026-10-13

The fee row on an official schedule is only one slice of trading cost. When the book is thin, a marketable order can move through several price levels, and that slippage often dwarfs the commission. Platforms show depth and spread on the trading screen and publish fee schedules in their help or fee centers. This guide helps a reader in India build a quick pre-trade cost check using those official surfaces, without copying third-party percentage tables.

Measure the spread and nearby depth before clicking market

Look at the gap between best bid and ask and at how much size sits within a few ticks. If your order size is large relative to top-of-book depth, expect average price to differ from mid. Mentally walk your size through the visible levels to see a rough average. When that average is outside your tolerance, switch to a limit or cut size. On phones, zoom the book so you do not misread stacked quantities.

Add official fee-page costs to the slippage estimate

Open the exchange fee schedule for your product and tier while signed in. Add estimated taker fee for a marketable order to the slippage you just approximated. That combined figure is a better go or no-go signal than fee alone. Maker fees matter when you rest orders, but they do not erase slippage if your “limit” still crosses the book. Date the fee row you used so tomorrow’s decision does not rely on memory.

Prefer staged limits when news widens the book

During event-driven sessions, spreads can jump in seconds. Split size into smaller limits rather than one large market ticket. Recheck depth between slices. If you must exit urgently, accept slippage consciously and reduce leverage or notional beforehand so one walk through the book cannot cascade into liquidation on futures.

Journal a few fills to calibrate your intuition

After notable trades, record mid at click, average fill, fee charged, and spread width. Patterns appear quickly: certain pairs or hours may routinely cost more. Use those notes to set personal size caps. Escalate fee disputes only through official in-app support with trade identifiers, never through cold DMs offering “fee rebates.”
