Moving beyond OTP texts: passkeys and authenticator apps for your exchange login

Guides · 2026-10-01

One-time passwords by text message are so familiar in India that many people assume they are the safest option. For an account that holds money, they are in fact the weakest second factor, because they depend on your phone number and mobile operator. SIM swap fraud and number recycling can send your codes to someone else. Authenticator apps and passkeys avoid that dependency. This guide compares them in plain terms, explains how to set them up on Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget and how to avoid a lockout when you change phones.

Why text codes fall short

A text message travels over the telephone network and is tied to your number. Anyone who convinces an operator to issue a duplicate SIM, or who gains access to your operator account, can receive your codes. Messages can also be delayed when you travel or when coverage is poor, which makes a lockout more likely exactly when you need access. Text codes are better than nothing, but they should not be the only protection for a funded account.

Authenticator apps in practice

An authenticator app creates short-lived codes from a secret stored on your device, with no network involved. The key weakness is the setup key: if you lose both phone and key, recovery takes time. When you enable the app, write the backup key on paper and store it somewhere private. Do not photograph it, because camera rolls are often synced to cloud accounts that may themselves be attacked.

Passkeys: sign-in tied to your device

A passkey uses your fingerprint, face or screen lock to confirm that it is you, and it is bound to the genuine website. A fake page cannot use it, so passkeys resist phishing well. Check the official help centre of your exchange to see whether passkeys are offered, what they protect and how many devices you can register. Registering two trusted devices avoids dependence on one phone.

Plan for a new or lost phone

Before switching phones, confirm that the second factor works on the new one and only then wipe the old one. If a phone is lost or stolen, sign in from another trusted device, change your password and follow the official recovery process. Keep a short paper note of which method each account uses. This turns a stressful emergency into a checklist you already know.

Risk boundary: India Crypto Guide

Digital assets are volatile and derivatives can amplify losses. This website has no login, wallet connection, deposit form or customer-support chat. A referral link only records attribution; it does not guarantee access, pricing, rewards, approval or investment results. Availability can differ by residence, legal entity and product, so no regional access is assumed from language or branding alone.
