Many people in India start with the instant buy screen, then notice they paid more than the chart showed. A limit order fixes that by letting you state the most you are willing to pay or the least you will accept when selling. The order form on Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget looks slightly different on each, but the fields are the same. Understanding them once means you can use any of these exchanges confidently.

Price and quantity, and how they relate

Open the spot market for the pair, for example a coin against USDT, and choose Limit in the order panel. The price field is the price per coin you accept. For a buy, setting it below the current best ask means the order waits in the book until sellers come down to you. The quantity can be entered in coins or as a total in USDT; the other value is calculated automatically. Check that the total matches what you meant to spend before you continue.

Time in force: how long the order stays alive

Most exchanges default to good till cancelled, which keeps the order open until it fills or you cancel it. Advanced settings may offer immediate or cancel, which fills what it can right away and cancels the rest, and fill or kill, which executes only if the whole quantity is available at once. There is often a post-only option that cancels the order if it would execute immediately, which helps you stay a maker. For a first order, good till cancelled is the simplest choice.

Maker, taker and where the cost appears

A limit order that rests in the book and is filled later usually counts as a maker trade, while one that matches an existing order immediately counts as taker. The two often carry different fees, and the live rates for your account are listed on each exchange's fee schedule page. After the order fills, open the order history and the trade details to see the fee actually charged and in which asset it was taken.

When the order does not fill

If the market moves away, your order may sit unfilled for hours. Check the open orders tab, which shows the amount filled so far. You can leave it, cancel it, or edit the price if the exchange allows. Avoid chasing the price by repeatedly raising a buy limit; that tends to recreate the market order you wanted to avoid. Remember that funds reserved for an open order are locked, so cancel stale orders if you need the balance.
